Shame off You

Shame

“Walking into the room, I surveyed the landscape and looked down, wanting to avoid eye contact. Perhaps it was to avoid being known. If the eyes are a mirror to the soul, maybe someone would look into them and say that I was not enough. These people did not know me. It was the DMV, for crying out loud.” (pg. 46)

I suspect that shame in one form or another is something that every one of us face. We might cover it up with activity or perfection, but deep inside of each of us is that feeling that others might find us to be not enough.

Shame Off You by Denise Pass does a good job of helping us face those feelings and examine them in the light of God’s perspective. Denise not only shares her own story, but her chapters are so deep that you will examine your own.

Here is the author’s description of the study:

Shame Off You is the story of a girl who shrunk her shame. It is a guide for recognizing the shame all around us and how to rid ourselves of shame biblically. There is a biblical lens of Truth, Humility and Grace that we view shame through, as well as Cycles of Shame and Redemption, a Shame Spectrum and Shame Quiz so we can evaluate how shame is impacting our lives. There is also a resource guide in the back of the book that covers 40 different common shames we might encounter along with Scriptures to combat that shame.

Shame Off You systematically covers everything from feeling shunned and rejected, to being shy, to worrying about what others thought or said about me to traumatic shame that paralyzes us.

I think I’d recommend that this book be done in groups. One of the deepest parts of shame is the belief that we are the ‘only.’ By doing this book in a group you will not only figure out that you aren’t the only, but it will also help you not get lost in the depth of this study. There is something about speaking the reality that helps us bring it into the light and become free.

Every chapter has application questions, as well as a devotional that helps you bring the issue being discussed before God and get His perspective. No matter the way that shame shows up in your life, I am confident that this book will help you dig down and reveal it – giving you the ability to draw closer to God.
