Will God give me more than I can handle?

Overwhelming bills

When you are going through a rough spot, often someone will say  “Well you know, God won’t give us more than we can handle.”

But they are wrong.

You are supposed to have more than you can handle. In fact, if you have more than you can handle, you are right where God wants you. He wants you to be in a place where you can’t handle everything and you need to lean on Him.

If you have more than you can handle, it means:

    • You are not stagnant
    • You are learning
    • You are growing
    • You are giving God lots of opportunities to change you and work through you

When you have more than you can handle, God will always be there to give you the strength, wisdom and focus to overcome. He wants you to relax in His hand and let Him work through you.  He is very interested in letting you be pushed to the point where you cry “God, help!” You will truly begin to live when you are dependent on Him.

Where did this thought (God won’t give me more than I can handle) come from?  My guess is that it is a perversion of

“No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.”

God will never let you be backed in a corner where you have no way out but to break relationship with Him and sin.  He will always provide a way out.  He will always be with you, teaching, guiding and correcting you.

However, when life has you up to your eyeballs, remember that the One who made you is much more capable than you are at making your life turn out right.  You can rely on Him to write the next chapter and give you ingenuity beyond what you imagined.

  1. Perhaps we should say instead, God won’t give us more than “we” can handle. God invites us to be cooperative friends of Jesus in community. You are right, if we can handle it alone, what do we need God and others for? Together we can do what we could never do
    alone. Great post.
